Coronavirus: Advice on staying safe and what you can do if you are worried.

Advice provided by Psychologist Laverne Antrobus.

1. Don't bottle up your worries - Talk to a trusted adult
2. Find different ways to stay in touch with elderly relatives - either by telephone or video call
3. Get your information from trusted sources - like Doctors, NHS and Newsround
4. Don't worry about what you cannot control - Do what you can to control the spread of the virus, Wash your hands and follow the advice of Doctors
5. Do things you enjoy and keep yourself busy - you could try reading a book, playing a board game or doing some arts and crafts.
6. If your school has closed and you are at home - Your school can provide you will all the schoolwork and revision materials you need
7. Organise your day - Try to ensure that you have time to study, but also time to relax.
8. Follow the NHS advice about staying in your home - The NHS website advises that you should stay at home to stop coronavirus spreading, but they do say that you can do one form of exercise per day, for example a run, walk or cycle alone (inform parents) or with members of your household.



Getting a Good Night’s Sleep!

Clinical psychologist Dr Claire Halsey provides her top tips for getting a good night's sleep -


1. Be active and busy during the daytime
Get outside (The NHS recommend that you should only leave the house for one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle- alone or with members of your household). You can also build a Den or kick a ball around. Inside you can have a dance off in the living room, set yourself an obstacle course or act out your favourite story.


2. No napping during the daytime
Sleeping during the daytime may make it harder to sleep at night because your body may have had all the rest it needs. Try to stay awake till bedtime


3. No lights, no noise
Keep the light out and block any noise too, your brain will find it easier to switch off if you keep the curtains closed and have done your best to block out extra noise.


4. Slow Down
Pick quiet games in the hour before bedtime by choosing puzzles, board games and reading and to turn off tablets and TV's.


5. Use your imagination
Try thinking of something a bit boring will help you switch off- e.g. think of fluffy white sheep jumping over a fence over and over again.

They have created a well being journal filled with challenges and activities to keep children happy, healthy and active whilst at home.




Do you need some ideas about how to reduce your child’s sugar intake?  Reaching for sugary snacks and treats might feel very tempting while staying at home, so try swapping items for some healthy alternatives



Joe Wicks - The Body Coach

To help maintain your physical fitness, Joe will be live streaming ‘PE with Joe’ every morning at 9am on YouTube.  Previous episodes will also be accessible on his YouTube channel and each episode is 30 minutes long.  It is quite high intensity, but  a lot of fun!  And you can always start by just doing 10 or 15 minutes and then building up. There is a long introduction in the first episode which you may want to skip.



Cosmic Kids Yoga 

To support your mental and physical wellbeing, you may find this relaxing and calming. The clips are of varying lengths, but are all fairly short.  You can access Cosmic Kids Yoga on their YouTube channel.  You will find yoga, mindfulness and relaxation designed especially for primary school aged children, but there’s nothing to stop adults benefitting as well!
